Record chase in Lahore: Pakistan hunt down 326 to win tri-nation final
In the final of the tri-nation ODI tournament played in Lahore, Pakistan chased down Sri Lanka's 325/8, reaching 331 for seven with nine balls to spare to win by three wickets. It was not a comfortable chase. The contest stayed open until the closing overs, and the last hurdle was cleared by Shaheen Shah Afridi, whose six took the team's total to 331. Nine balls and three wickets in hand indicate that the credit belongs as much to the lower order's composure under pressure as to the top order.
Sri Lanka, batting first, made 325 for eight. Their innings was anchored by Kamindu Mendis's 131, the third-highest individual score by a Sri Lankan in an ODI final. Only Sanath Jayasuriya (189) and Marvan Atapattu (132 not out) sit above him. It is also the second-highest individual score in any ODI final against Pakistan, with Brian Lara's 153 in 2026 at the top. That innings ultimately proved non-decisive, because the total was chased down.
The match produced a cluster of records. Pakistan's successful pursuit of 326 is being described as the highest successful chase in an ODI tournament knockout, equalling India's 326-run chase against England in the 2026 tri-nation final. The two innings together produced 656 runs, described as the highest combined total in a tri-nation ODI series or tournament final. These record claims still need confirmation from the official scorecard.
At the centre of Pakistan's win is Fakhar Zaman. He completed 4,000 ODI runs in 96 innings, the second-fastest by a Pakistan batter. He also has two centuries in three ODI tournament finals, becoming the second Pakistan batter after Saeed Anwar to do so. Most importantly, he has four ODI centuries while chasing targets above 300, the most by any Pakistan batter. Babar Azam and Younis Khan have three each. That is a distinctive, pressure-specific record, though three finals remain too small a sample to call him a settled specialist.
Babar Azam's numbers are also under discussion. He reached 4,000 ODI runs in just 82 innings. Since Fakhar is described as second-fastest at 96 innings, the inference is that Babar is Pakistan's fastest to the mark. He has three centuries in chases above 300, behind Fakhar in that specific niche but still a strong figure.
Another attraction of the final was Arafat Minhas. In his first eight ODIs he has two scores above fifty and two five-wicket hauls, making him only the second cricketer in the world to do so. JJ Smit had achieved the feat in his first ten ODIs. It is a rare start, but eight matches cannot establish batting position, bowling style, opposition quality or home-away robustness.
The title matters emotionally for Pakistan, as it is their first multi-nation ODI trophy since the 2026 ICC Champions Trophy, ending a wait of roughly nine years. Pakistan's 338/4 against India in the 2026 Champions Trophy final remains their highest ODI knockout score, with the 331 in Lahore now second.
This win should not, however, be read as proof of a permanent transformation. Earlier in the same series, Pakistan were bowled out for 110 by Sri Lanka. The gap between 110 and 331 within one tournament reflects persistent volatility, and the 'unpredictable' tag used in the media matches that behaviour. The Lahore surface appears to have been batting-friendly, given the 656-run aggregate, but no pitch report, toss or dew information is available. Success at home still needs to be replicated on away tours.
Looking at the bowling and fielding, Pakistan conceded 325/8, meaning the record chase was needed partly because Sri Lanka's total was never contained. That gap between self-belief and actual capability will only be settled by results away from home or at neutral venues in the coming months.
One caution is necessary. All record claims around this final are currently unverified against an official scorecard. The 326 chase, the 656 aggregate, Fakhar's 300-plus chase centuries and Arafat Minhas's feat should be treated as final only once confirmed by the ICC or a reliable statistical database. The result is clear; the record narrative built around it still has to pass the test of verification.
