Mustafizur Gets a Team in the Big Bash; Rishad's NOC Also Heading for Approval
The path to Australia's Big Bash League (BBL) appears to be opening for Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman. According to reports from Cricbuzz and Dhaka Post, Melbourne Renegades have made an offer to include Mustafizur in their squad, which the player is understood to have accepted. The player's agent has submitted an application for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), and the board is reportedly in the process of granting approval. However, no official statement from the board has surfaced on the matter so far.
Reports suggest that leg-spinner Rishad Hossain is also likely to receive permission to play in the Big Bash. Rishad has been linked with the Hobart Hurricanes. The indication that the NOC route is smooth for both players comes from the fact that the BCB recently liberalised its rules on player participation in overseas leagues played outside the Indian subcontinent.
Interestingly, Mustafizur's BBL entry is happening at a time when the BCB is preparing to stage its new franchise T20 league, the D Three Trophy. Reports clearly state that both players will be unavailable to their franchises for the T20 leg of this tournament. That is the very period when the BBL season is in full swing, and the December-January segment of the global T20 calendar is the busiest for overseas players. In this same window, the BBL, SA20, ILT20 and Bangladesh's own new league all compete for the same limited pool of players.
This is believed to be why both players went for below-par prices in the D Three Trophy auction. According to the report, Rishad Hossain was bought for 60 lakh points, while Mustafizur's price stayed below one crore points. The agency report also states that there were 'other reasons' behind such low bids for the two star players. The direct hint here is towards their commitments in foreign leagues. However, the exact auction amount for Mustafizur has not been disclosed in any report, which is a significant information gap in itself.
It is worth noting that reports on the D Three Trophy suggest the tournament is not limited to the T20 format alone but has multiple legs. This means the players are not entirely out of the whole tournament but will only be absent from its T20 leg. This is a nuance that is often lost in the headlines. It is also possible that the franchises bought these players keeping in mind the legs in which they can play, spreading the tournament across different parts of the year.
From a player-evaluation perspective, Mustafizur is counted among Bangladesh's most experienced white-ball specialists. His identity is built on cutters and slower-ball variations, with which he controls batters in the death overs. In recent years his career has also seen shoulder and side-related injuries, making a full Big Bash season a challenge for his workload. On the other hand, Rishad Hossain is Bangladesh's young wrist-spinner, capable of attacking the stumps. Australia's pace-and-bounce conditions are considered favourable for both types of bowlers, so this overseas stint could be technically beneficial for both.
It is also important to note that the D Three Trophy auction figures are being shown in a currency like 'points', which is traditionally in lakh or crore taka. This suggests it is possibly a points-based salary-cap mechanism, and confirmation is still pending.
Mustafizur and Rishad both going to Australia in the same window is a sign of the maturation of Bangladesh's white-ball pipeline. It shows that the country's T20 resources are now valued at scale in foreign leagues. But at the same time, it exposes a structural weakness of the BCB: it cannot guarantee the presence of the biggest attractions of its own new league. The way the board has moved the NOC process forward suggests it does not see its T20 league as a strategically critical product in the first cycle, or that it has no legal mechanism to compel players.
Bangladesh's T20 team traditionally has an identity built on spin and cutter-reliant bowling on slow, low home pitches. Mustafizur and Rishad are exactly this profile of bowlers, who can succeed in Australian conditions too. If both have a good Big Bash stint, they will return with an understanding of Australian conditions, which will be a net gain for Bangladesh in future tours or a World Cup in similar conditions.
Another significant risk is related to player availability. If Big Bash commitments stretch into an international series window, Bangladesh may have to take the field without both its premier death bowler and its premier wrist-spinner. For now, sources say formal NOC approval is awaited, and without the board's official confirmation, the matter will be considered incomplete.
